New Book Release                                            Living With Laws                Launched on  29 January 2011

A candid account of his life as a lawyer, Sri. V.R. Venkatakrishnan, the author at 85 is recounting his professional journey that took him through the labyrinths of a justice system of yesteryears spanning over 61 long years. During this journey, he rubbed shoulders with some eminent lawyers and judges. LIVING with LAWS  is an idea for many young minds including lawyers and judicial officers.

The author, in the first chapter, Crossing the Ocean of Law, recounts his adolescence at his ancestral home in Trichur (Kerala), in the pre-Independence days and his student days with teachers like the late Joseph Mundassery and late Rev Fr. John Palocaren, narrating his formative professional life spent with giant lawyers like the late V.L.Ethiraj, late V.T.Rangaswami Iyengar and late N. Sundara Iyer of the Madras High Court. The book spiced with interesting anecdotes examines a wide variety of subjects such as:

          • Lawyers, their tactics, ethics and their relationship with judges.
          • Truth & Righteousness in the realm of Justice, probing concepts like Satya, Dharma and Niti.
          • Judges, judgments, tools of justice, jurisprudence and their guardians examining the Indian judicial system, the explosion of litigation, appointment of judges ,their conduct and accountability, whether judges sway in the storm, media and judiciary, contempt of court, civil laws and justice and transformation of the judiciary.
          • Judicial activism, fundamental rights, commissions of inquiry, death sentence and mercy killing.

The author is one of the very few senior members of the profession, still active in practice, who came to the High Court of Kerala from the Madras Bar in the year 1956 when the State of Kerala was formed. Many of his junior lawyers and para-legal staff who worked in his chamber have gone on to become judges, successful lawyers, judicial officers and managers of large enterprises. He was President of the Advocate’s Association and was honoured by the High Court of Kerala in 2006 at the 50th year anniversary celebrations of establishing the court in the State.  He was felicitated by the Bar and the Bench at an impressive function held in Cochin on 11th June 2010. He lives in Cochin with his wife Seetha, an accomplished veena artiste.

With reviews from Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Judge, Supreme Court of India and Justice J.S.Verma, former Chief Justice of India, Living with Laws was launched in Cochin at a Book Release function on 29th January 2011 in the presence of eminent judges and legal luminaries.
